BASE COLORS The 3 base horse colors are black, bay and chestnut. Horses may express various tones of those base colors, and some colors are affected in more dramatic ways by other genetics. For some, that occurs gradually over time (gray, roan) and others express less common coloration from birth or as they mature (dilutions). The presence of many unique genetic markings that a horse can express makes for a huge variety of potential combinations that can occur on top of a base coat. In SWEM, Spirit not being a dun was an error made very early into development due to lack of knowledge on genetics and coat colours. The breed is very well known for becoming bleached through sun and the effect of sweat on a black coat, often resulting in widespread or localising fading to a dark bay colour, partially (see below) explaining the Jessie coat's striking rusty-tinged areas. Screen legend John Wayne had a favorite horse that he starred alongside in several of his films. During his later career, Wayne appeared alongside the horse Dollor in some of his most classic westerns. The actor had an affinity for the chestnut quarter horse that appeared in his films, so much so Wayne often requested him by name. Dick Webb Movie Productions owned the show horse. Wayne even went so far as to strike a contract with the production so that he was the only one allowed to ride Dollor on film. "'Dollor is a movie legend just as much as John Wayne was,' owner Debra Keffeler told the Chicago Tribune in 1985. 'A cowboy is not a cowboy without his horse. They're both my heroes.'" Wayne made alterations to the script to give his equestrian friend proper screen time. He incorporated several mentions of Dollor’s name into the film. Howard and Debra Keffeler bought the horse, aware of its star-studded past. They gave Dollor a peaceful retirement on their Texas ranch, occasionally bringing him out for appearances. Frank is fondly known and loved for his adorable appearance and personality.  Frank's coat, known as 'tri-colour skewbald' may be known by other names, such as Pinto. Skewbald is a term frequently used in the UK to identify a brown or chestnut horse with white markings, as opposed to a Piebald which is white and black.  The term 'tri-colour' is a somewhat colloquial phrase to differentiate a bay Skewbald that retains some expression of a black mane and tail (meaning 3 colours are present; brown, black, white). The most common genetics or markings seen in skewbald horses is that of Tobiano, but skewbald-type markings can be caused by other genetic factors such as Frame Overo, Splash and Sabino. It is possible that several of those could be present on a horse at one time. Hannah made the Toothbrush coat personally for Boat. Toothbrush bears similarities to Sweetboi, who was also primarily created by AlaharranHonor, though his coat is markedly less blue, lacks a dark face mask, and he is a Grulla (Black-base Dun) rather than a Blue Roan (Black-base Roan). Lighter toned horses, especially with single dilute cream present such as Buckskin and Palominos, may have striking dapple markings largely hidden under their coat that only fully reveal themselves when clipped (hence the term clipper dapples).  When Kodiak was first added to game, his hooves had a VERY blue tint to them, so much so that they were dubbed his 'blue suede shoes'. While his updated gleaming black hooves, true to the stunning reference used to create the coat, certainly make one adorable buckskin, Delphi secretly misses catching a glimpse of those blue hooves and smiling at their silly name.  Kodiak is commonly mistaken as a dun given his coloring, but is definitely buckskin based on the absence of a dorsal stripe and any other primitive/dun markers such as leg barring. The reference horse for Kodiak was a confirmed buckskin with clipper dapples. Annie is (at the time of writing) the only coat to be created by a staff member who is not  generally considered a coat artist (though Lace's skillset is incredibly versatile and she has done both texture art and animations alongside her other roles in research, as a senior builder and an admin).  In Red Dead Online (RDO), Annie is a chestnut 'Tovero' mustang favoured by Lace for her speed, stamina and loyalty in the face of danger. Or as Lace put it; "She's the only horse that doesn't dump me off at every scary thing she sees. She's a great horse for offroading trails, she's kind of just my dependable girl!" As a Tovero, Annie has combined markings of both Frame Overo and Tobiano, which results in an extensively white horse. This type of horse, where colour is removed from most areas except the head and occasionally small patches elsewhere, may be referred to as a medicine hat. Annie, like many medicine hat horses (Tovero), has blue eyes! To date, Arishant is the artist with the greatest number of in-game coat contributions (over 45!), and is well known for their super speedy output and willingness to take on all kinds of challenging coats. On the official SWEM coat document, Lady Guinevere is listed as a dappled black. However, their appearance and underlying genetics looks to suggest a rather fantastical combination of Silver (Silver Dapple) as well as Birdcatcher spot markings. Lady Guinevere was based off of the dapple black thoroughbred in Red Dead Redemption and was named in honor of child Jack Marston who was quite fond of stories of knights of the round table and Arthurian tales. As a mount, Lady Guinevere could be describe as almost fearless, often helping to escape dangerous obstacles in the wild west such as wolf packs or cougars. Her SWEM coat was changed somewhat from the Lady Guinevere in RDR2, to include some of Arishant's favorite coat traits, such as birdcatcher spots and a faded blanket appaloosa on the top of her rear. As one of the oldest (long-term) members of the team, and an accomplished self-taught animator, Eric has earned their appreciation coat 100 times over. The many gait, jump, idle, refusal, flight and player animations they have animated (then animated again, and re-animated once more) are integral to the beauty of everything SWEM offers to Minecraft equestrians. To date, Mia is the only Lapis / Redstone coat that is not only inspired by but directly references a non-equine species. The deep brown-black, white cheeks and striped legs of this unusual and naturally shy forest-dweller is sure to turn the heads of anyone nearby! Mia also has an orange feather in her mane, making her (to date) the only coat to have an 'accessory' added. Mia was named after Eric's 'heart dog' who unfortunately passed away. Despite being added very late into development, Mia was conceptually and artistically created well ahead of many other coats, and was refined and completed in time to be added for V1's release. For all their work and contributions, the addition of an appreciation coat more tailored to their vision was well deserved. Angel is one of only a few coats boasting heterochromia and (to date) the only coat with a cosmetic enhancement that would not be explainable due to genetics (pink hearts). She was also the well-known and much loved real horse of Hannah and the inspiration for much of SWEM when vanilla Minecraft lacked the true joys of owning and riding horses. SWEM started because of a stubborn, green, beautiful horse named Lucy. When family troubles meant I couldn't afford to be with her anymore, all of my love had to go somewhere. I started pouring it into work and games with horses. After crying to my roommate a few too many times about needing to reset the backups because 'Lucy' was blown up by a creeper for the 10th time, I decided to make a mod to make destriers out of Minecraft horses. - AlaharranHonor (Hannah) Lucy was made as a surprise addition for Hannah's birthday, created by Hauket and finished up by Malli. The coat was designed to closely represent the real-life inspiration. Lucy was presented to Hannah, alongside custom painted Sweetboi and Lucy Breyer models, on a world made for the reveal where Hannah was taken on a trail to read personalised well-wishes from staff and betas. Upon reaching a small ranch with a house and a barn, Hannah met up with her favourite horses; Sweetboi, Jessie, Valley, Novick and Blazie, all grazing in their pasture. After exploring the property, she was shown around back to a roundpen with the extra special gift.  Lucy is not intended to be an acquirable coat, and was added specifically for Hannah as her heart-horse.
